Tips for Storing Your RV

If you have a large, class A motorhome, where to park it when you're not traveling is probably a concern. A large RV can take up your entire driveway, and you may not even be allowed to park it on your driveway because of local codes or HOA rules. Even if the length of your RV is short enough to fit in your garage, it probably won't fit due to the height. If you don't have a large property with suitable parking in your backyard, then finding an RV storage facility is a necessity. Here are some options and how to prepare your RV for long-term storage.

Types Of RV Storage

If an affordable option is important and you aren't concerned about your RV being out in the open during all kinds of weather, then open storage is a good choice. You'll park your RV on a pad or lot among other RVs while you're not using it, and you'll be able to pick it up and return it any time you want. You can even provide your own cover that will protect your RV from the sun while it's parked in the open.

Covered storage is the next step up. This provides an overhead canopy for your RV so it is shielded from UV rays and rain. The ultimate in storage for your RV is enclosed storage. This is where you park your RV in a building so it has the most protection against storms and vandals. You can even rent heated RV storage, but it is an expensive option.

Preparations For Storing Your RV

If you get your RV out of storage every weekend, then you might not need to be meticulous about your preparations, but if you're storing it for the long term, there are some things you want to do to prepare. This includes washing the RV and then making sure it is dry before you put a cover on it. Also, clean the interior thoroughly. This is important because lingering odors or food crumbs will attract mice and roaches, and you don't want to return and find your RV full of pests.

You'll also want to remove valuables from the RV as well as bedding items so you don't have to worry about fabrics getting mildew. You may also want to leave desiccant inside to absorb excess moisture so the RV stays dry. Servicing your RV before you put it in storage makes picking it up more convenient since it will be ready to drive out of the facility and you won't have to waste time getting it ready for a trip.
